In addition to receiving the Mattie McDonnell Cup, the big prize from last year's IFC success for Longwood was the opportunity to play in the 2019 Senior Football Championship.
This means that Longwood along with Dunboyne, Ratoath, Na Fianna and O'Mahonys will field Senior Championship teams in both hurling and football for the coming season and hopefully beyond.
Excitement has been building over recent weeks as the date for the championship draws approached and everyone associated with the club wondered who we would be playing? Well we need wonder no more.
Longwood will make their SFC bow against Ratoath in Round 1. Having been drawn in Group B along with Ratoath, Rathkenny, Moynalvey, Ashbourne and Summerhill, the boys will face a series of stern examinations but we know it's one the team will relish. We look forward to supporting the lads throughout the campaign.
The Senior Hurling Championship draw saw Longwood drawn against neighbours Killyon in the opening round. Group A also contains reigning champions Kiltale, Kildalkey, Dunboyne and Ratoath so there will be no easy games but with 4 out of 6 teams qualifying for the knock-out stages, every team will have realistic ambitions of advancing from the group. After that, who knows?
