IFC Group B - Round 5: Longwood 0-15 Drumbaragh 1-12
Longwood and Drumbaragh shared the honours in the final round robin game of this year's Intermediate Football Championship at a typically cold Dunganny on Friday evening. Drumbaragh must be commended for mounting a stirring second half comeback which ultimately secured their intermediate status for 2019.
Longwood, who had already secured a quarter-final spot prior to this game, played well in the opening half, kicking some excellent scores and building a 7 point half-time lead. However, the team and management will be concerned at the nature of their second half performance as they struggled to contain their doughty opponents. That said, the boys did show a degree of composure in the closing minutes to ensure at least a point which guaranteed them second place in a Group B.
Longwood: Gary Heneghan, Paul Gill, Coran Byrne, Johnny Furey, Bob Maguire (0-1), Joey Stenson, Karl Ennis, Eoin Lynch, Niall Mulvey, Ryan Moore (0-7), Sean Sheridan, Evan Coyle (0-4), Wayne Leonard (0-2), Aaron Ennis (0-1), Anthony Healy.
Longwood's loyal band of supporters can look forward to the knockout stages with hope and optimism. The players and mentors deserve tremendous credit; the turnaround from relegation play-off in 2016 & 2017 to the quarter finals in 2018 is no mean achievement particularly for a dual club with a relatively small pool of players.
We encourage the Longwood public to come out and support our hurling and football teams over the coming weeks.
Attention now turns to our Junior D footballers who face Kilmainham in Trim on Monday evening.
This is followed by our U14 Footballers who play their 3rd final of the year in Dunganny on Wednesday evening.
