Carnaross 2-15 Longwood 1-13
Longwood's journey to Carnaross yielded nothing in terms of league points but few could argue with the work rate and effort expended as the footballers from South Meath gave another excellent display in what has been a solid league campaign to date.
The final scoreline flattered Carnaross somewhat, indeed a last minute goal pushed the margin of victory out to 5 points at a time when Longwood were themselves pushing hard for an elusive winning goal.
Carnaross opened strongly and were 4 points ahead after 10 minutes. Longwood maintained their composure and took the game to their opponents, opening up the defence with some excellent interplay to score a series of points from David Rowley, Anthony Healy, Ryan Moore and one particulalry excellent score from Chris Lynch at the end of one of his trademark marauding runs.
Carnaross stole in for a goal after 27 minutes and that proved to be the difference at halftime as the hosts went to the break leading 1-8 to 0-8.
Longwood dominated the 3rd quarter with points from Sean Sheridan, David Rowley and Aaron Ennis followed by a cracking goal from Evan Coyle. Victory looked a strong possibility at this stage but Carnaross responded strongly with a string of points
the majority of which came from dead balls. Whether these frees were as a result of indisciplined Longwood defending or dubious refereeing decisions is very much open to debate. Some of the frees seemed a little on the soft side but I guess this reporter may be a little biased!
Ultimately Carnaross won the the day and move ahead of Longwood on the League table.
Both teams deserve enormous credit for serving up an excellent game of football on what was a beautiful summer's evening.
Longwood can look forward with confidence as they have shown time and again that they are more than capable of performing well in Division 3.
