Longwood’s minor hurlers secured some well-deserved silverware when they defeated Clann Na nGael in the Shield Final at a sun-splashed Longwood on Thursday evening.

The home team, under the astute guidance of Jim Dorran and Karl Ennis, were the better team for the majority of the contest yet the concession of two goals just before the break, saw them trail by two points at the halfway mark.

With their coaches instructions ringing in their ears, the team produced a devastating display of hurling to turn a two point deficit into a fourteen point victory.  William Phillips was primary scorer with an impressive 2-5 to his name.  He was ably supported by James Cully, deadly from placed balls, and Patrick Nicholson, whose pace caused all sorts of problems for the Clann Na nGael defence.

Midfielders Henrik Peciulis and Rian Duffy worked tirelessly throughout the hour, providing an excellent platform for their forwards while also protecting their defence.

With Rian Holton, who gave a masterclass at centre back, Conor Dorran and Dean Phillips shackling their direct opponents, the result was never in doubt throughout the second period.

Well done to the players and coaches.  A great win and an excellent start to the season.

We look forward to following their fortunes through the coming months.
