Next Sunday is a very special day for one of Longwood’s finest sons.
Our very own Michael Burke will represent his beloved Meath for an utterly astounding 200th time.
We can only marvel at the dedication and commitment, not to mention the raw talent, required to achieve such sustained excellence.
Meath GAA supporters, and in particular the good folk of Longwood, have been privileged to see Michael don the green and gold with distinction over the past twenty years.
He was quick to recognise that playing for Meath was truly an honour and he took on the responsibility with relish.
Michael’s incredible skill and dexterity has enabled him to represent the Royal County in both codes, most recently playing a crucial role in Meath’s Christy Ring Cup success last summer.
Most mere mortals would have seen that as the perfect opportunity to sign off on their intercounty career, but Burkey is no ordinary player. Another year, another challenge. And, as his many opponents will attest to, he has never shirked a challenge.
200 not out……………….and the promise of more to come.
The icing on the cake is the fact that this historic game will take place in Longwood, on the field of dreams where Michael has honed his skills since picking up a hurley as a young boy.
Please come up and support Michael and the Meath team on Sunday – it’s sure to be a memorable occasion.
Let’s give one of our own a day to remember. No one deserves it more!
